Biographical note: Joseph Buchanan, a native of Washington County, Virginia, studied medicine in Philadelphia after attending Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky from 1804 to 1805. In 1808 he returned to Lexington and was employed the following year by Transylvania as an instructor in medicine.
